My skin care routine

My skin has looked pretty spectacular lately so I wanted to take a few minutes to go over my skin care routine, just in case anyone was interested or needed a little help in the skin department.

I should start out by saying that I have moderately oily skin. My oil production isn’t in high gear or anything, but I do start to feel a bit greasy within three or four hours of cleansing, and I have enlarged pores primarily around my nose. I also have a few persistent dry, flaky patches around my nose and mouth that won’t go away no matter how much I moisturize or exfoliate.

My AM routine is as follows:

Using my Clarisonic, I cleanse in the shower with a foaming cleanser. Right now I have two that I like, the Skinfood Egg White Pore Foam and Origins Checks and Balances Frothy Face Foam. Both of these cleansers are nice and foamy and make my face feel super clean. I’ve noticed that the Skinfood dries my face out a bit, so I think that might become my summer cleanser. The Origins is a bit pricey but does feel balancing and my skin appreciates that during the current seasonal transition.

Once or twice a week I use a physical exfoliator, and right now I’m really liking the St. Ives Blackhead Clearing Face Scrub. This is the green tea version and I’ve never used it before, but it makes my face feel really nice. I used the apricot version when I was a teenager (because who didn’t?), and it was too scrubby for my skin but this is just right.

After cleansing both morning and night I’ve been using the Thayers Alcohol-free Rose Petal Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera as a toner, and it’s delightful. I’m so used to oily skin toners that burn and smell terrible that this is almost like a vacation. It’s got a light, refreshing floral scent and makes my skin feel clean and moisturized. It also removes any (possibly imaginary… I don’t know) residue from my cleansers.

Then it’s time for moisturizer. I’m still on the hunt for one that I love, but this week I started using L’Oreal Paris Hydra Genius Daily Liquid Care. It’s specifically for oily skin so it’s more of a gel than a cream, and I’m pleasantly surprised by the quality. The biggest con for me is the way this smells; it has a sort of chemical or skin acid smell that I don’t personally like, but I know that some people do. I like just about everything else about it: the packaging is beautiful, heavy blue glass with a sturdy pump and a cap, and a little goes a long way. It’s a little bit mattifying but not as much as my La Roche-Posay Effaclar Mat Oil-Free Facial Moisturizer. That stuff basically sucks all of the oil out of my face, which is great in the summer but now that’s it’s fall I need something else. When I use the L’Oreal my face actually feels moisturized, not dehydrated.

At night my routine is slightly different:

Whether I’ve worn makeup or not, I start with Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water. I haven’t used many brands of micellar water but I really like this one. I don’t like having to shake the Garnier version and it makes my skin feel dirty, and the Caudalie one is too expensive for the amount I use. Bioderma is the standard for micellar water and now I understand why. I use this to take off any eye/brow makeup and to remove a layer of foundation and it does a stellar job. My eye makeup is generally waterproof and this doesn’t have any problems getting it all off.

The next step is a cleansing oil or balm. I like both, and since I just ran out of my favorite  IT Cosmetics balm, I’ve been using the I’M MEME I’m Cleansing Oil. I’ll do a mini review of the IT Cosmetics balm when I do my empties… eventually. The I’m Meme cleansing oil is one of my many K-beauty products, and it’s from one of my favorite brands, Memebox. It’s got an odd scent that I’m not crazy about, but it doesn’t feel too sticky and gross on my face. That’s something I don’t generally like about cleansing oils. I let it sit for about a minute, then emulsify and remove it with a washcloth. It takes off the bulk of my makeup, even when I’m wearing long-wearing or “life-proof” foundation, which doesn’t come off with normal cleansers or soap. I follow that up with one of my cleansers. Double cleanse ftw!

I follow this with the witch hazel toner, and then No7 Beautiful Skin Night Cream for Oily Skin. This stuff is freaking great. It smells good, it makes my skin soft, and the packaging looks way fancier than the price tag. This is now a staple in my daily routine and I highly recommend it for my oily skin sisters who acknowledge that they still need some moisture.

So that’s my routine… what’s yours? I’d love to hear your comments, even if you’re like, “Yeah, I use dish soap.”
