Favorite Christmas songs

Guys. It’s day 21. WOOT.

I like Christmas music. It’s not my favorite thing ever, and I can’t listen to it 24/7, even during the holiday season, but it’s not something I loathe. My taste is Christmas music is a little weird, so I decided to share some of my favorite songs with you. So here they are, in no particular order:

Gayla Peevey – The Christmas Hippo Song

Ok, so I know I said that I wasn’t going to list these in any particular order, but this might be my most favorite Christmas song of all time. It’s so gloriously strange, and this little girl is totally me. She’s logical and knows exactly what she wants, and her mom’s attempts to deter her are met with facts. Hippos are vegetarians so it’s cool, she can have one. Santa can bring it in the front door, and there’s plenty of room for the hippo in the garage. Love it. So good.

And I’m not going to lie: I definitely sing this at the top of my lungs when it comes on the radio. Or when I’m in the shower. Or when I’m sitting in my living room working and I get bored. In August. No big deal.

Mariah Carey – All I Want for Christmas Is You

No explanation needed. Behold the early 90s glory.

Barenaked Ladies – Elf’s Lament

I’ve loved this band since I was a kid, and their Christmas album is no exception. They’re constantly the most creative musicians, and they decided to write a song from the perspective of the elves. It cracks me up.

Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan – God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

Ok, I told you I love this band, and on this track, they’re joined by another one of my high school loves and fellow Canadian Sarah McLachlan. It’s jazzy and gorgeous. Listen to it. LISTEN TO IT.

Stephen Colbert – Another Christmas Song

Did you know that way back in the day Stephen Colbert did an entire Christmas special, complete with celebrity guests and a soundtrack? Well, now you know. Merry Christmas.

I highly recommend checking out the entire album as it’s glorious, amazing comedy gold, but I’ll give you a little taste here with the first track.

She and Him – Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

Did you also know that Zooey Deschanel, the manic pixie dream girl we all love, was (maybe is? I’m not sure) a band? Yes. It is a thing. I love her voice.

Harry Connick Jr – (It Must’ve Been ‘Ol) Santa Claus

Whatever happened to this dude? I thought he was the hottest thing ever. When he joined the Will & Grace cast I about died. I love his voice and his style. This video is from the second season of MadTV, and he’s singing in a tank top so, you know, bonus.

Nightmare Before Christmas – What’s This?

Ok, so this is Danny Elfman singing as Jack Skellington in what might be my favorite holiday movie of all time. It’s such a great movie. I don’t even like musicals that much, but I hardly notice how little talking is in this film. It’s 25 years old and I still love it as much as the first time I saw it.

Seriously, how did this movie get made? By Disney, of all studios. It boggles the mind but I’m eternally grateful. Go watch it immediately if you’ve never seen it.

So now you know what I’ve been listening to obsessively. Do you have any songs that you just can’t get enough of?
