Non-scary Halloween movies for the scaredy cat in all of us

Embarrassing confession time: while I love creepy things, I can’t watch, listen to or read them alone at night or I scare the hell out of myself. Sometimes I even get creeped out during the day, depending on the story. This is especially inconvenient because Dan works nights, and he’s been spending most of the last couple of weeks working in another city. We’re in the creepy high holy season, and I can’t bring myself to watch anything really scary.

So for all of the scaredy cats like me who still want to watch Halloween things, I’ve compiled a list of movies that aren’t scary but still fit with the spirit of the season. Sometimes with actual spirits.

Hocus Pocus

This movie is a Halloween classic. There’s so much early-90s goodness, and I think it might be Bette Midler’s best role.

This movie introduced tween girls to the epitome of young teen handsomeness, Devon Sawa. He’s in the movie for about a minute, but he made a lasting impression. I also think that this is the second greatest role of Christina Ricci‘s career.

The Addams Family

This is Christina Ricci’s actual best role. Her turn as Wednesday helped inspire my burgeoning creepiness when I was a kid. Also, Morticia is a queen and her relationship with Gomez is #goals.

I’m totally into this movie in all forms; the original version is a classic starring comedy icons, and even the sequel was good. I know that I’m in the minority, but I also really enjoyed the newer, all-female version. It starred some of the most brilliant and funniest women currently working, and this was by far Chris Hemsworth’s best role.

There’s one moment in this movie that scared the hell out of me when I was a kid, but it’s claymation, so not actually that scary. This movie is practically perfect in every way. Alec Baldwin is at his hottest, Winona Rider at her weirdest, and I love every minute of it.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

One of the greatest animated films in the history of ever. I talked about this in one of my Christmas posts last year.

Litte Shop of Horrors

The thought of a giant plant that eats people is terrifying, but this movie definitely isn’t. It’s a musical, with Rick Moranis and a giant puppet. Enjoyable, but not scary.

The Worst Witch

They say you can tell a lot about a person by where they know Tim Curry from, but I don’t know what it says about me that this is the movie I think about when his name comes up. Sure, he was wearing a weird cape and leers at teenage girls, but it’s fine. I like to think that Fairuza Balk was bullied so much in witch school that she changed her name to Nancy and then The Craft happened.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

I think this is where normal people know Tim Curry from. Dr. Frank is an extremely memorable part; there’s singing, dancing, corsets, and glitter. There’s a reason this is a cult classic and people spend their weekends dressing up as the characters. The only scary thing in this movie is Susan Sarandon’s attempt to fake an orgasm.

Shaun of the Dead

I don’t like zombie movies. Like aliens, they scare the crap out of me. The only thing that makes this movie palatable for me is Simon Pegg and how ridiculous he is. His only goal is to make it to the bar for a pint to wait out the apocalypse. I think that would be me.

  1. I love so many from this list! There’s only 2 that I’m not as familiar with… The Shaun of the Dead I think I’ve seen once, and The Worst Witch I have never seen (but I want to now!) I have seen everything else many times over! Hocus Pocus, Beetlejuice, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and The Nightmare Before Christmas I try to watch every year!
