2020 travel goals

Damn y’all, I’ve got a lot of goals for 2020. And it’s already almost a quarter over with.

I like to travel. I don’t love flying, and there comes a point where I’m done being out in the world and just want to be home in my sweats, but my wanderlust is a pretty well-established fact. This year I have some specific things I want to accomplish.

Visit Salem, Massachusetts

Can you believe I’ve never been there? Me, the person who’s obsessed with history and creepy things, who only lives a few hours away, has never been to this gem of kitsch and creep. I’d love to go in the fall of course, but I don’t know if I want to pay inflated prices for the added spookiness, so I may schedule this for spring instead.

Take a train cross-country

This is a new goal. I accidentally stumbled upon a YouTube video of some dude taking an Amtrak train from Penn Station in NY to Orlando, and I’ve been kind of obsessed with the idea ever since. From there I did a crapload of research about the different routes, rooms and amenities, and it’s something I’m itching to do. Sure, it’s not much cheaper than flying and takes a ridiculously long time, but it’s an experience. Taking the train is for people who enjoy the journey as much as the destination, and I definitely fall into that category.

Get my damn Passport

Another shocker, but I don’t have one. I never got one when I was younger because I never went anywhere, and now I don’t know what’s holding me back. The price tag? The paperwork? I don’t really know, but I’m doing it this year if only so I can visit the Ripley’s in Niagara Falls. The Canadian side, that is.

Visit Saint Augustine, Florida

This might be another shocker, but I’ve never been to the oldest and (arguably) most haunted city in the US. I originally planned to go while I was in Florida in December, but there was an unexpected change of plans and I didn’t make it. I had a sad. It’s a place that’s been on my bucket list for a long time and I’m really hoping this is the year I check that particular location off.

Vlog a long-distance road trip

Dan and I are driving from Albany to Orlando in May for a family vacation. Yes, Dan works for an airline so flying would be free, but we’ll need a car while we’re down there, and car rentals aren’t cheap. I love long road trips but I don’t normally go with another person, so I’m going to have an opportunity to film some of it. We may also go to some new places on the way down, so I’d like to get some of it on video and do a little road trip vlog. It might be fun.

More planning and packing posts

Interested in what I’m taking on a 30+ hour train trip? Want to know how I plan my road trips, including choosing routes, finding decent hotels and not panicking when I get lost? I’d like to put more of that here.

So, that’s it from me. Let’s go see some new places and do new things!

  1. Fun! The hubs and I booked a train trip down the coast line from Portland, OR to somewhere near Los Angeles, CA in August—it should be fun! I rode the train from Davis, CA to Portland, OR when I was 7 and LOVED it!
